Los Angeles County is a longer run from Yorba Linda than the rest of our local map — roughly 35 miles to downtown and closer to 45 into the South Bay — but it is where a large share of Southern California’s aerospace and defense work sits, and the parts are usually small enough that the drive is irrelevant.
The corridor through El Segundo, Hawthorne, Torrance, Carson and Long Beach has been designing and building aerospace hardware since the years after the Second World War, and it is busy again. Aerospace and defense added around 11,000 jobs to Los Angeles County between 2022 and 2024. The US Space Force established its headquarters in El Segundo in 2021. Venture funding into LA-area defense technology passed $4 billion last year, more than double the year before.
The constraint that matters to you is capacity: demand for advanced manufacturing space in the South Bay currently runs at about four times supply. Programmes are moving faster than local shops can absorb, and the detail work is what gets pushed out first.
What we take on for LA programmes
Mostly the parts that hold up a build. Turbine and pump detail in Inconel and Waspaloy. Structural fittings and actuation hardware in titanium, with thin walls and true-position callouts under 0.001″. Cooling-hole arrays at compound angles with position reports. Hardened tooling for the shops feeding those programmes. And identification work — UID plates, serialisation and data matrix to MIL-STD-130N — which is frequently the thing holding up a shipment rather than the machining itself.
Why EDM specifically
Superalloys work-harden under a cutter and thin sections deflect under tool pressure. Wire EDM applies no cutting force and cuts at any hardness, so the part can be heat treated first and finished second rather than fighting for size afterwards. On a nickel-based superalloy impeller or a thin-web titanium bracket, that is the difference between a part and a scrap report.
- Wire EDM — 4-axis with independent taper to 30°, ± 0.0001″, workpieces to 23″ × 15″ × 12″ and 2,200 lb.
- Sinker EDM — blind cavities and deep ribs in fully hardened material, mirror finish to 4 µin Ra.
- Hole-popping EDM — 0.004″ to 0.250″ diameter, depth ratios to 200:1, compound angles to 45° on curved surfaces.
- Laser part marking — MIL-STD-130N and ATA Spec 2000 with in-line grading.
ITAR and moving controlled data
Most South Bay work is export-controlled. We are ITAR registered and DFARS compliant, and access to controlled technical data is restricted as those regulations require. Do not upload ITAR-controlled files through the website form. Contact us first and we will arrange a compliant transfer method before anything moves.
Lead times and freight
Standard lead time runs 4–8 days on wire work and 5–9 on sinker, with a three-day expedite lane held back daily rather than promised and backfilled. Parts ship with tracking and the paperwork in the box, or we courier into the South Bay when a programme is tight enough to need it.
